Social media marketing is the process of marketing your product or service through social media sites such as Twitter, Facebook and Instagram. These sorts of websites allow individuals and businesses a platform to interact with each other and build relationships and communities online. Receiving personal interaction from an organisation can install a feeling of loyalty within followers and potential customers and by doing this may provide a steady flow of revenue for a particular organisation. Social media advertising, if implemented correctly, can be a highly cost-effective way to expand reach; meaning an organisation can deliver content in front of a huge audience at a very low cost.
Examples of successful social media campaigns include Coca Cola’s #ShareaCoke campaign started in Australia in 2011 and expanded to more than 50 countries before going viral in the United States during the summer of 2014. Coke replaced its logo on soda bottles and cans with the 250 most popular first names among teens and Millennials, along with generic names such as ‘Mom’ (Martin, 2015).
