Question

An internal SWOT analysis of the Turkish Football Federation

Answer

The Turkish football federation (TFF), also called the Turkish Football Association is the formal governing body of association football within Turkey. This federation was founded in 1923, and joined FIFA the same year and then UEFA in 1962. It deals with the Turkish national teams, the Turkish football league and cup. Strengths – The federation has changed the rules on the foreign player quota, allowing them to field 11 foreign players for Spor Toto Super League clubs. This will allow top Turkish teams to attract quality foreign talent such as Wesley Sneijder to Galatasaray, which can generate substantial revenue from shirt sales and sponsorships. Weaknesses – The Turkish Football Federation is widely known to be associated with corruption and scandals within their league, which has presented damaging impacts on the levels of trust from overall governing bodies such as FIFA and UEFA. In 2011, the Turkish Sports corruption scandal was an investigation about match fixing, bribery, organised crime and intimidation within the top two divisions (Super Lig and First League). Opportunities – As the footballing association has had several unsuccessful bids, most notably, they submitted a bid to host UEFA Euro 2016, but only narrowly missed out (7-6 in voting) to France, leaves them with great optimism that their country can hold future tournaments. This can generate an exceptional amount of revenue through ticket sales and tourism, which can help boost Turkey’s economy overall. Threats – As mentioned previously, there has been wide spread corruption throughout Turkish football, in which many of their teams have previously been banned from European competitions over match-fixing allegations. Fenerbahçe was banned for a total of two seasons from the Champions League or Europa League. Although the federation has now tried to clean up its act, there is still the present threat that this may arise in the future. Also the decline in the Turkish economy can furthermore have a damaging impact on investments in football.
